Carbon Monoxide Testing

Concerned about workplace exposure to carbon monoxide (CO) or other potentially dangerous gases, such as carbon dioxide (CO2), nitric oxide (NO) or nitrogen dioxide (NO2)? Airsafe offers dangerous gas and carbon dioxide testing services to help you keep your employees and contractors safe, both indoors and outdoors. Any questions? Call us on 1300 888 338.

Why Airsafe for CO, CO2, NO and NO2 testing and monitoring?

Airsafe offers testing, monitoring and consultancy services to control the risk of exposure to dangerous levels of carbon monoxide and other gases. We also give you the reassurance of knowing you’re dealing with one of NSW’s most experienced and respected occupational hygiene consultancies.

We can conduct an indoor and/or outdoor air quality assessment covering all potentially dangerous gases. Using state-of-the-art monitoring equipment, we will check the concentration of each gas in the air. If any gas exceeds the relevant exposure standard, we will recommend specific, actionable steps you should take to keep your workers safe.

Carbon monoxide, carbon monoxide, nitric oxide, nitrogen dioxide: what’s the difference?

Carbon monoxide (CO) often comes from vehicle exhaust. It can enter buildings through poorly located air intake ducts, from basement car parks, or via stairwells and lift shafts. Other major sources of CO are cigarette smoke and combustion appliances such as gas stoves. Health effects of carbon monoxide, even at low levels, include dizziness, nausea, and fatigue

Carbon dioxide (CO2) is a very common gas, a product of human breathing, cigarette smoke and vehicle emissions. The amount of CO2 is a useful indication of the ‘staleness’ of air and the adequacy of a ventilation system. CO2 only becomes a pollutant at a very high level.

Nitrogen monoxide or nitric oxide (NO) is an important signalling molecule in the body of mammals, including humans. It is also an air pollutant produced by cigarette smoke, power plants and automobile engines.

Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) is an intermediate compound in the industrial synthesis of nitric acid. Millions of tonnes are produced each year. This reddish-brown toxic gas has a characteristic sharp, biting odour and is a prominent air pollutant.
Both nitric oxide and nitrogen dioxide are emitted from high temperature combustion.

CO, CO2, NO and NO2 exposure standards

Safe Work Australia stipulates exposure standards for each of these gases. During carbon monoxide testing and other air quality monitoring, Airsafe compares the results with these exposure standards to determine if you need to take action.

See the Safe Work Australia website for current workplace exposure standards for airborne contaminants.

Managing exposure to carbon monoxide and other gases

As a person controlling a business or undertaking (PCBU), you are required by Work Health and Safety regulations to ‘ensure that no person at the workplace is exposed to a substance or mixture in an airborne concentration that exceeds the exposure standard for the substance or mixture’.

Complying with this requirement is difficult without access to professional air quality testing, monitoring and advice. Airsafe have specialist knowledge in potentially dangerous gases and can provide efficient carbon dioxide testing solutions for your workplace.
