Carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, nitric oxide, nitrogen dioxide: what’s the difference?

Carbon monoxide (CO) often comes from vehicle exhaust, and can enter buildings through poorly located air intakes, from basement car parks, or via stairwells and lift shafts. Other major sources are cigarette smoke and combustion appliances such as gas stoves. Even at low levels, CO can cause dizziness, nausea and fatigue.

Carbon dioxide (CO2) is a product of human breathing, cigarette smoke and vehicle emissions. CO2 levels are a useful indicator of how “stale” the air is and whether a ventilation system is doing its job; CO2 only becomes a pollutant at very high concentrations.

Nitric oxide (NO) is an air pollutant produced by cigarette smoke, power plants and vehicle engines.

Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) is a reddish-brown toxic gas with a sharp, biting odour, and a prominent air pollutant. Both NO and NO2 are produced by high-temperature combustion.

Exposure standards and your duties

Safe Work Australia sets exposure standards for each of these gases (becoming workplace exposure limits from December 2026). When we test, we compare the results against the relevant limit to tell you whether you need to act.

Under the NSW Work Health and Safety Regulation, a person conducting a business or undertaking (PCBU) must ensure that no one at the workplace is exposed to an airborne concentration above the exposure standard. Managing exposure to carbon monoxide and other gases

As a person controlling a business or undertaking (PCBU), you are required by Work Health and Safety regulations to ‘ensure that no person at the workplace is exposed to a substance or mixture in an airborne concentration that exceeds the exposure standard for the substance or mixture’.
