Our story

Airsafe was established in 1988, and in 1989 became the first asbestos and occupational hygiene consultancy in the ACT to gain NATA accreditation. We have operated continuously ever since. Today we work from our own NATA-accredited laboratory in Beaconsfield in Sydney, and we operate right across Australia, with travel built into every interstate quote.

Our people and credentials

Airsafe is a NATA-accredited public testing laboratory, Accreditation No. 2959. We have seven Licensed Asbestos Assessors on staff, where many consultancies have one. Reports requiring Certified Occupational Hygienist (COH) sign-off are signed by Philip Turner, Airsafe’s Certified Occupational Hygienist, an AIOH member with over 35 years of experience working with Airsafe. Our contaminated land work is signed off by Michael Edwards, a Certified Environmental Practitioner (Site Contamination), CEnvP-SC No. 40039, a registered professional geoscientist and Licensed Asbestos Assessor with more than thirty years in the field. Airsafe is certified to ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001, is a member of the Australian Institute of Occupational Hygienists, and our website won Medium Business at the 2021 Australian Web Awards. Talk to any Airsafe specialist and you can be confident they know what they’re talking about and know what needs to be done.

Track record

Since 1988 we’ve done occupational hygiene work continuously: air monitoring, noise, dust, silica and contaminant assessments, alongside asbestos and hazardous material surveys. On one of Sydney’s biggest jobs, the Sydney Metro West Eastern Tunnelling Package for Mann Group, that meant lead air monitoring, dust, diesel particulate, respirable silica, noise and occupational hygiene assessments as well as asbestos clearances, all on the one program. We’ve brought that range to sites like RAAF Richmond, where we monitored respirable silica, and Charles Darwin University, where we assessed welding fume. On the Sydney Airport Noise Insulation Program, Airsafe carried out the bulk of the lead air monitoring across thousands of homes and public buildings.

That work has taken us into the most sensitive sites in the state. Airsafe has worked at most major hospitals in New South Wales, including full asbestos and hazardous material audits at Prince Henry, Prince of Wales, Royal Prince Alfred, Concord, Bankstown, Sutherland and the Sydney Dental Hospital among many others, and at most of the state’s military, naval and air force bases. Our clients include every New South Wales university, councils, major builders such as Multiplex, Lend Lease and Built, government agencies including Sydney Water, NSW Education and Sydney Trains, and industrial sites including BHP at Port Kembla and Newcastle.

How we work

We’re an independent consultant, not a removalist. We identify the source of the issue, then verify that it’s been dealt with properly. We assess, monitor, write specifications, oversee licensed contractors and issue independent clearance and validation. We don’t do the removal or remediation ourselves, so there’s no conflict of interest: our independence and NATA accreditation mean you can trust our results.

We also own our monitoring equipment rather than hiring it in job by job: noise meters and dosimeters, sampling pumps, real-time dust monitors, the gas detectors we use for indoor air quality work, covering VOCs, formaldehyde, ozone, chlorine and nitrogen dioxide, mould and moisture testing gear, and two Olympus Vanta XRF analysers, all replaced and upgraded regularly. When you need us on site, we’re never waiting on equipment. If you’re in a rush, we can often get a consultant on site within hours. And because our instruments are calibrated and maintained on our own schedule, all Airsafe test reports have metrological traceability.

We’re also easy to work with. Nothing is too much trouble, we don’t throw our weight around on site, and we treat your problem as our problem. We focus on practical solutions, not just pointing out what’s wrong. That’s a large part of why our clients keep coming back, and why we’ve earned over 600 Google reviews at 4.9 stars.
